Drinks

 

Friends buy ‘rounds’ for each other when they go to a bar together. A round is a drink for each person. One person offers to buy the first round. Then, other people take turns buying rounds.

 

When sitting at a bar, it’s customary to leave a tip of one or two dollars for the bartender. He or she might have a tip jar. If so, leave the tip in the jar.

 

Red and white wine are commonly drunk with meals, both at restaurants and at home. This is especially true if a family has friends over to their house for dinner. If you’re at a restaurant and are unsure which wine would go well with your meal, you can ask the waiter to make a recommendation.

 

Laws prohibiting minors under twenty-one years of age from drinking are rigorously enforced. Liquor stores, bars, and restaurants can lose their license to sell liquor if they sell alcohol to under-aged people. Drunk driving laws are also strictly enforced. Anyone caught driving drunk may be fined heavily, lose their driver’s license for a period of time or even spend time in jail.
