Unit 17: Education

Public education lasts twelve years in the USA. Its three levels are elementary school, hunior high school (middle school) and high school. Most schools are public, which is free. Private schools tend to be very expensive.

Junior high and high school students are required to take subjects such as math, english and science. They may also choose elective courses in areas such as art, foreign languages, and music. They don't stay in the same classroom all day. Rather, students go around from class to class. Teachers remain in the same classroom.

Universities and colleges are not free, but students can receive financial assistance from their schools and government.
