Unit 18: Studying a foreign language
Americans are not required to study a foreign language in junior high or high school. However, many universities will not accept applicants unless they have studied another language for two or more years. That encourages the majority of high school students to study a foreign language. The most popular languages to study are Spanish, French and German.
Most high schools and universities conduct language classes almost entirely in the foreign language. The teachers speak very little English in class, and the textbooks contain little or no English.
