Unit 12 Book 2
Music
An interesting note about American music is the way styles come in and go out of fashion. The disco style of the late 1970’s was declared ‘dead’ in the 1980’s. Yet, in the 1990’s it became popular again. These 'retro' movements influence pop music most of all. In a way, they can help bridge generation gaps, as kids listen to their parents’ music.
Singing is an important part of many American customs. The national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner” is sung at every major sporting event. Christian church services include the singing of hymns. KTVs, However, are not common, though there are ‘karaoke bars’ where people get up on stage and sing.
Ragtime and jazz are among the musical styles developed in America. Jazz, as well as rock and roll, have had the power to bring people of all races together. American popular music has also gained an international audience, making it an important part of the first global generation.
